It all started over some beer. It was really too loud to have a meeting. It was late, I was tired, I had a guest up from Minneapolis who I only had for 24 hours and didn't really want to be in a meeting but..... I said I'd make the poster, they could organize the event. It wasn't even supposed to take place at the shop. There were big plans for funding and grants and a funny host and rules and..... Thank god some things fall apart in the particular way they do. We're on Sundog 5 now and the last time we got together there were over a dozen readers and everyone went on eating and drinking and reading poems well past 1 am. Yes. They did. We had people getting up for the first time who'd been coming since the beginning. We had poems about cinnamon buns and nuns. We had Angel Lush Cake and Mini quiches. We had a little evangelism read out of a Vanity Fair, we had some Lewis Carroll. We had, of course, some Leonard. These nights are not your average uptight, hold your breath, don't know when to clap, long drawn out your legs are asleep and you wished you gone to that really really bad movie instead so you feel like you could actually walk out without hurting anyone's feelings kind of poetry reading. You will never sit in agony holding your bladder waiting for that poem to end. Everyone is welcome. We try to bring in a few 'featured' readers each time. Sometimes the readings are themed, sometimes it's just a good old fashioned Sundog complete with Bluesman 5000, our very own house band, Amanda scaring us a little with her pieces about spam and tic tacs and pork, Kate running some new pieces past us, me trying to flirt with 50 people at the same time in order to entice them to eat more and throw more cash into the donation glasses, and thanking people profusely when they do. We are going to be putting a Sundog CD this summer, a combination of music and spoken word, as well as working on more workshops, more writers coming to perform with us, the special edition Sundog on July 23 &24 taking place at the Brandon Folk Music and Art Festival and the production of Second Troy's first competition winner, Tara Solheim. Feel free to email if you'd like more information, would like to read, would like to become involved in some way, or know a writer traveling through Brandon who might like to have a reading at the space! |
